7 apps that track what your watch doesn't

A watch counts steps, heart rate and hours asleep. These seven measure what it leaves out: how much daylight you got, how loud your day was, what the air was like, and how you actually felt about it.

The apps that track what your watch doesn't are Rem, Sunshine, Decibel X PRO, Bearable, Plume Labs, Posture Reminder and Moodnotes. I built Sunshine; the other 6 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Rem

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.2 (2,726)

Rem works out when you fell asleep and woke up on its own, then breaks the night down. Nothing to press before bed.

Skip it if you want the numbers to hold still: reviewers report scores changing after updates, and there is no route to support when they do.

  2. Sunshine Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 5.0 (7)

Sunshine measures how much daylight you actually got, in the background, with nothing to press. You track steps, sleep and heart rate, but not the light.

  3. Decibel X PRO

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · $69.99 · Utilities · App Store 4.7 (6,916)

Decibel X PRO is a sound level meter in dBA, so you can find out how loud the room you spend all day in actually is.

Skip it if you want to keep and replay recordings; that is where the complaints concentrate, and features that used to come with Pro have moved into a subscription.

  4. Bearable

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (6,415)

Bearable logs symptoms, mood, sleep and whatever else you suspect, then shows which of them move together.

Skip it if you want to try before handing over an account — it asks you to sign up first, and the charge at the end of the trial is the other thing reviewers flag.

  5. Plume Labs

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.7 (9,739)

Plume Labs gives air quality where you are and where you are heading, hour by hour rather than as a daily average.

Skip it if you want standard AQI — Plume reports on its own index and does not say where the sensor is, so the numbers will not match your weather app.

  6. Posture Reminder

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.3 (251)

Posture Reminder reminds you to sit up and to stand, on a schedule you set rather than whenever it feels like it.

Skip it if you want it on your wrist — there is no Apple Watch haptic, and reviewers report the interval it promises not being the interval it keeps.

  7. Moodnotes

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.6 (10,959)

Moodnotes is a mood tracker that also asks how you got there, so it nudges at thinking habits instead of only storing a number.

Skip it if you want to log a mood without paying — reviewers say the basics now need premium, and the redesign lost the people who had used it for years.

Sunshine is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Questions

What are the apps that track what your watch doesn't?

The apps that track what your watch doesn't are Rem, Sunshine, Decibel X PRO, Bearable, Plume Labs, Posture Reminder and Moodnotes. Each one had to do a different job in this particular moment — where two apps work the same way, only one of them makes the list.

Which of these apps is free?

Rem, Sunshine, Bearable, Plume Labs, Posture Reminder and Moodnotes are free to download on the App Store. The others show their price on each card. "Free" on the App Store often means a free download with paid extras inside.

Which of these apps did the author build?

Sunshine — I built it. The other 6 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
