5 apps that keep the clues to feeling off in separate places

The all-in-one symptom tracker asks twenty questions a day and gets abandoned by the second week. These five each keep one clue and nothing else — how you slept, when your head went, whether the dose was taken, where you are in the cycle, and what your heart rate is saying — so the doctor gets a picture instead of a shrug.

The apps that keep the clues to feeling off in separate places are AutoSleep, MigrainePal, Medisafe, Clue and Welltory. I built MigrainePal; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. AutoSleep

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · $8.99 · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.7 (61,749)

AutoSleep tracks sleep from the Apple Watch with no buttons to press — the Watch app is optional. Duration, a sleep bank balance, heart rate and Apple's sleep stages, with no analytics, no ads and no upload. Paid once.

Skip it if you want a reading you can take at face value: accuracy is the recurring complaint, the charts take learning, and the Lights Off feature does not work for everyone.

  2. MigrainePal Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.9 (7)

MigrainePal opens an attack with one tap and the start time; put the phone face-down and add pain level, aura and notes later. The calendar lays weeks and months side by side, in something you can show a neurologist.

  3. Medisafe

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Medical · App Store 4.7 (101,427)

Medisafe is the pill reminder, with drug-to-drug interaction warnings and prescriptions imported through Health Records from 100+ US hospital systems. Whether a dose was taken, and when, is the first thing a doctor asks.

Skip it if you want it to stay a reminder: the premium pop-ups and the health-topic feed are what long-time users are leaving over, and half doses and early doses are awkward.

  4. Clue

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (405,064)

Clue predicts periods from your own cycle length and flow, and takes 200+ symptoms to log against them — cramps, energy, mood, skin, sleep — so a bad week can be read against where you were in the cycle. Berlin-based, under GDPR.

Skip it if you started with it years ago: the free features have been moving behind the subscription, and a recent update removed the custom tags some people used for medical tracking.

  5. Welltory

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.7 (133,861)

Welltory reads heart rate variability from the phone camera or an Apple Watch and turns it into a stress and energy reading. Fatigue and burnout tend to show up here before they show up anywhere else.

Skip it if you are careful with subscriptions: the auto-charged annual plan and the trial that isn't one are the loudest reviews, and several people found the numbers hard to trust.

MigrainePal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Questions

What are the apps that keep the clues to feeling off in separate places?

The apps that keep the clues to feeling off in separate places are AutoSleep, MigrainePal, Medisafe, Clue and Welltory. Each one had to do a different job in this particular moment — where two apps work the same way, only one of them makes the list.

Which of these apps is free?

MigrainePal, Medisafe, Clue and Welltory are free to download on the App Store. The others show their price on each card. "Free" on the App Store often means a free download with paid extras inside.

Which of these apps did the author build?

MigrainePal — I built it. The other 4 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
