5 apps for people who get migraines

A migraine rarely has one cause; it is the weather, the night’s sleep, the water and the coffee lining up on the same day. These five each keep track of one of those — the pressure drop coming, the attack itself and what came before it, how much you drank, how you slept, and how much caffeine is still in you — so the pattern shows up on paper rather than in hindsight.

The apps for people who get migraines are Barometric Pressure Today, MigrainePal, Water tracker Waterllama, AutoSleep and HiCoffee. I built MigrainePal; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Barometric Pressure Today

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Weather · App Store 4.7 (186)

See pressure drops coming in the forecast, hours ahead.

  2. MigrainePal Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.9 (7)

Log an attack in one tap, then see which triggers line up with it.

  3. Water tracker Waterllama

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.9 (162,376)

Water reminders and a tally of everything you drink.

Skip it if you want to log drinks other than water or fix a mistake for free — both need premium, and reviewers see more upgrade prompts than reminders to drink.

  4. AutoSleep

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · $8.99 · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.7 (61,749)

Tracks your sleep from your Apple Watch automatically. No buttons.

Skip it if you want a reading you can take at face value: accuracy is the recurring complaint, the charts take learning, and the Lights Off feature does not work for everyone.

  5. HiCoffee

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (843)

Logs every coffee and shows how much caffeine is still in you.

Skip it if you drink anything unusual, or you want Health sync — custom drinks and the sync both sit behind the paywall, and the preset list is narrow.

MigrainePal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Which of these apps is free?

Barometric Pressure Today, MigrainePal, Water tracker Waterllama and HiCoffee are free to download on the App Store. The others show their price on each card. "Free" on the App Store often means a free download with paid extras inside.
