5 apps for people the weather gets to

For some people a front coming through is a headache, not a forecast. These five track the parts of the weather that reach you — pressure, pollen, air quality, humidity — and the attacks you can then line up against them.

The apps for people the weather gets to are Barometric Pressure Today, MigrainePal, IQAir AirVisual, Allergy Plus and Hygrometer. I built MigrainePal; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Barometric Pressure Today

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Weather · App Store 4.7 (186)

Barometric Pressure Today charts pressure trends and a long-range forecast for as many locations as you like — so a drop is something you saw coming.

  2. MigrainePal Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.9 (7)

MigrainePal logs an attack in one tap. Weeks and months lie side by side, so cluster days and patterns surface — in something you can show a neurologist.

  3. IQAir AirVisual

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Weather · App Store 4.8 (44,840)

IQAir AirVisual reports air quality for 500,000+ locations with a 48-hour forecast, from government monitoring stations plus their own sensors.

Skip it if you want the forecast rather than the number for right now: reviewers rate the hours-ahead prediction as the weakest part, and coverage thins out away from a monitoring station.

  4. Allergy Plus

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (23,141)

Allergy Plus is a five-day pollen forecast next to the weather, and a notification when the level changes where you actually are.

Skip it if you need it working on the day you need it — outages lasting days, in the middle of pollen season, are what reviewers write about most.

  5. Hygrometer

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Weather · App Store 4.7 (6,112)

Hygrometer is one dial and one number: the humidity around you, on a face built to look like an instrument rather than a dashboard.

Skip it if you expect it to measure the room — it reads a regional forecast rather than your own air, and reviewers regularly find it 20 to 40 per cent out.

MigrainePal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.
