5 apps for the last half hour of the day
Nobody plans the last half hour of the day, which is why it usually goes to a screen. Each of these takes one piece of it — the body, the breath, the sound, and the last thing you think before the light goes off.
The apps for the last half hour of the day are Bend, Meditation Pal, Breathwrk, Endel and Day One. I built Meditation Pal; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Bend
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (174,100)
Bend is short stretching routines you can follow on the floor by the bed — hundreds of them, written for every age and level rather than for athletes.
Skip it if you want free routines or written form cues: most of the library is behind the subscription, and a small animation is thin instruction if you are starting out.

Meditation Pal Editor’s pick
★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Productivity · App Store 5.0 (7)
Meditation Pal lets you bring the audio you already trust, press play and set the timer. Pay once. No account, no subscription, and the session stays on the phone.

Breathwrk
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (18,033)
Breathwrk is breathing patterns you follow on screen — it counts the in, the hold and the out so you don't have to keep track.
Skip it if you knew it before the redesign — the rebuilt app is the single biggest complaint in recent reviews, and the routines past the free handful need a subscription.

Endel
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.6 (33,874)
Endel generates soundscapes on the fly from things like time, location and heart rate, rather than serving them off a playlist. Nothing to choose.
Skip it if you want a clean trial — the recurring complaint is a subscription that is easier to start than to stop, and prompting that does not let up.

Day One
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Health & Fitness · App Store 4.8 (118,426)
Day One takes one entry before the light goes off — text, photos, audio — in an app whose whole design is that nobody else reads it.
Skip it if you bought it years ago and expected that to be that — the move to a subscription is the loudest thread in its reviews, and a decade of features has left it less simple than a journal needs to be.

Meditation Pal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Questions
What are the apps for the last half hour of the day?
The apps for the last half hour of the day are Bend, Meditation Pal, Breathwrk, Endel and Day One. Each one had to do a different job in this particular moment — where two apps work the same way, only one of them makes the list.
Which of these apps is free?
All 5 are free to download on the App Store; some sell extras or a full version inside the app.
Which of these apps did the author build?
Meditation Pal — I built it. The other 4 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
