5 apps for people who are always running late

Being late is rarely one big mistake; it is three small ones — getting up late, losing a minute to the keys, and leaving at the time you meant to arrive. These five take one each: an alarm you cannot snooze from bed, a countdown to the next thing that sits where you will see it, keys you can ring from your phone, and two ways of knowing when you actually need to leave.

The apps for people who are always running late are Alarmy, Due Pal, Tile, Citymapper and Waze. I built Due Pal; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Alarmy

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.8 (248,893)

Solve a math problem or do squats before the alarm will stop.

Skip it if you need an alarm that cannot fail — long-time users report alarms not sounding after updates or once the app is closed, and a free version that now leans hard on ads and subscription prompts.

  2. Due Pal Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Productivity · App Store 5.0 (1)

A live countdown to your next thing, right on your Lock Screen.

  3. Tile

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.8 (1,019,176)

Ring your keys from your phone, or see where you last left them.

Skip it if you need to find things lost away from home — reviewers describe a short range, batteries that give out well before the promised year, and an app that wants your location all the time.

  4. Citymapper

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Navigation · App Store 4.9 (109,152)

Compares every way to get there in real time, so you know when to leave.

  5. Waze

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Navigation · App Store 4.8 (3,194,718)

Live traffic reported by other drivers, and an arrival time you can trust.

Skip it if you would rather stay on main roads or plan a drive in advance — reviewers report reroutes through residential side streets, GPS that drops out mid-trip, and the plan-a-drive feature getting harder to reach.

Due Pal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Which of these apps is free?

All 5 are free to download on the App Store; some sell extras or a full version inside the app.

Which of these apps did the author build?

Due Pal — I built it. The other 4 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
