7 underrated wardrobe apps you've probably never heard of

A wardrobe app is usually either a spreadsheet of your clothes or a shop. These seven sit in between: building a capsule out of what you own, remembering the outfit that worked, and working out what a jacket has actually cost per wear.

The underrated wardrobe apps you've probably never heard of are Capsule Wardrobe Builder, OOTD Pal, Cladwell, Indyx, Pureple, Whering and Style DNA. I built OOTD Pal; the other 6 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Capsule Wardrobe Builder

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.2 (42)

Capsule Wardrobe Builder builds a capsule from what you own: a small set of pieces chosen so that most of them go together.

  2. OOTD Pal Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Photo & Video · App Store 5.0 (6)

OOTD Pal is for the outfit that finally felt like you and is now a mirror selfie buried in your camera roll: it keeps the photo, with what you were actually wearing.

  3. Cladwell

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.3 (1,024)

Cladwell builds outfit ideas from the clothes already in your closet. Nothing in it asks you to buy anything.

Skip it if you are not willing to photograph the whole wardrobe first; the rewrite also lost a lot of goodwill, including a free-for-life promise reviewers say was withdrawn.

  4. Indyx

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.8 (1,604)

Indyx indexes your closet and tracks cost-per-wear, so the jacket you wear weekly and the one you wore once stop looking the same.

Skip it if you want the calendar: it stopped working without a paid membership after an update, and the URL importer gives out with little support behind it.

  5. Pureple

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 3.9 (6,120)

Pureple takes one photo of each piece, then assembles outfits from what you own and scores the ones you put together yourself.

Skip it if you used it before version 4: the rewrite is what nearly every recent review is about, and long-time users say it lost the sorting they relied on.

  6. Whering

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.7 (11,811)

Whering is a digital closet with a social side: see how other people wore a piece you also own.

Skip it if you came for the outfit suggestions: that is the feature reviewers say does not work however much they upload, and support is slow to answer.

  7. Style DNA

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.3 (7,496)

Style DNA suggests daily outfits from your own closet, built around your colouring rather than a generic trend feed.

Skip it if you already know your season: the colour analysis is the good part, and reviewers say what it builds on top adds complication rather than outfits.

OOTD Pal is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

The underrated wardrobe apps you've probably never heard of are Capsule Wardrobe Builder, OOTD Pal, Cladwell, Indyx, Pureple, Whering and Style DNA. Each one had to do a different job in this particular moment — where two apps work the same way, only one of them makes the list.

All 7 are free to download on the App Store; some sell extras or a full version inside the app.

Which of these apps did the author build?

OOTD Pal — I built it. The other 6 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
