5 apps for pets that aren't cats or dogs

Pet apps assume a cat or a dog, which is no help if yours is a rabbit, a lizard or a tank. These five are built for the animals that cannot tell you when something is wrong, where the daily record is the early warning.

The apps for pets that aren't cats or dogs are Rabbit Care, Beardie, Fishi, Aquarimate and Aquarium Guide Fish Identifier. I built Beardie; the other 4 are other developers’ apps.

Four stars is my score for how well an app answers this moment. An app I built gets four and a half — that is a rule, not a comparison. The App Store’s own average is on each card beside it.

  1. Rabbit Care

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 4.4 (5)

Rabbits cannot tell you when something is wrong, so Rabbit Care logs meals, weight and condition each day and lets the graphs surface the drift early.

Skip it if you keep more than one rabbit — switching between animals is clunky, and sharing the log with someone else takes working out.

  2. Beardie Editor’s pick

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Lifestyle · App Store 5.0 (4)

Beardie is built for bearded dragons specifically: growth stages, morph genetics, and the difference between a healthy adult and an underweight one.

  3. Fishi

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Reference · App Store 4.6 (557)

Fishi manages tanks, terrariums and aviaries side by side, for the house where the animals do not all live in the same kind of box.

Skip it if you keep anything unusual — adding a specific fish needs the subscription, and reviewers keep finding their species missing from the list.

  4. Aquarimate

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · $9.99 · Productivity · App Store 4.4 (625)

Aquarimate logs the water itself — the parameters you are supposed to test and then actually compare week to week.

Skip it if you resent paying twice — it is a paid download with a subscription on top, and reviewers who wanted more than a graphed spreadsheet did not find it.

  5. Aquarium Guide Fish Identifier

    ★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Reference · App Store 4.2 (13,842)

Aquarium Guide Fish Identifier identifies the fish and tells you what it needs, for the tank you inherited and cannot name half of.

Skip it if being asked to leave a review before you can add your own fish would put you off; that gate and a small species library are the two things reviewers keep raising.

Beardie is one of mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.
