7 iPhone apps better than the defaults
The apps that come with an iPhone are fine, which is exactly why most people never look past them. Each of these replaces one of them for someone who uses it every day: the reminders list, the timer, the calendar, the notes, the music player, the forecast and the inbox — each doing the same job with fewer taps or more character.
The iPhone apps better than the defaults are Things 3, Focus Train, Fantastical, Bear, MusicPal, CARROT Weather and Spark Mail. I built Focus Train and MusicPal; the other 5 are other developers’ apps.

Things 3
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · $9.99 · Productivity · App Store 4.8 (27,989)
Instead of Reminders: plan today and every project in one tidy list.
Skip it if you plan alongside other people or want reminders tied to a place — it has neither shared lists nor location alerts, and each platform is a separate purchase.

Focus Train Editor’s pick
★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Productivity · App Store 5.0 (5)
Instead of the Clock timer: every focus session becomes a train ride.

Fantastical
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Productivity · App Store 4.2 (24,423)
Instead of Calendar: type “lunch Friday at 1” and the event is made.

Bear
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Productivity · App Store 4.7 (6,870)
Instead of Notes: write in Markdown, sort with tags. No account needed.

MusicPal Editor’s pick
★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · Free · Music · App Store 5.0 (2)
Instead of Music: play the audio files you own, offline. No feed, no ads.

CARROT Weather
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Weather · App Store 4.7 (87,425)
Instead of Weather: forecasts from a robot with five personalities.

Spark Mail
★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · Free · Productivity · App Store 4.6 (82,608)
Instead of Mail: every account in one inbox, real people on top.

Focus Train and MusicPal are mine — everything else on this list is someone else’s app. How that works.

Questions
What are the iPhone apps better than the defaults?
The iPhone apps better than the defaults are Things 3, Focus Train, Fantastical, Bear, MusicPal, CARROT Weather and Spark Mail. Each one had to do a different job in this particular moment — where two apps work the same way, only one of them makes the list.
Which of these apps is free?
Focus Train, Fantastical, Bear, MusicPal, CARROT Weather and Spark Mail are free to download on the App Store. The others show their price on each card. "Free" on the App Store often means a free download with paid extras inside.
Which of these apps did the author build?
Focus Train and MusicPal — I built them. The other 5 are other developers’ apps, and none of them knew they were going to be on this list. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements anywhere on the site.
